Dentures are custom-made for each patient, with several stages of planning usually involved to ensure they are both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Dentures can be an ideal solution for replacing several missing teeth at once and can offer a more cost-effective solution to filling unwanted spaces.
Dentures come in essentially two different materials, either acrylic-based or metal-based. The material is usually a decision made between yourself and the dentist based on your dentition and the shape of your mouth. Acrylic dentures can be used as an immediate temporary solution to replace missing teeth before permanently fixed solutions like bridges or implants can be placed or before a metal-based denture is made.
There is also a cost difference between the two, with acrylic being the cheaper option. The artificial teeth used are matched to the shade and shape of your existing dentition – these will be shown to you during the process of the denture being made to ensure the best result.
The life span of a denture varies according to type; immediate dentures normally require replacement after 3 months, but following that, a life span of 4-7 years can be expected if the denture is well-maintained and relined as needed.
