November is Mouth Cancer Action Month, and it’s time to shine a spotlight on an important health issue that often goes unnoticed. The amount of mouth cancer cases hit a record high last year, with almost 11,000 cases diagnosed in the UK. In the last 20 years, there has been an increase of 133% – so alongside checking your boobs and bits, it’s time to get checking your mouth.
We know that cancer can affect anyone, and that early detection is key to successful treatment. While The Briars is here to support you, most of the key checks will be done by you at home! So, let’s talk about what you can do to keep your mouth healthy and keep you smiling…
Mouth cancer, or oral cancer, occurs in any part of the mouth, including the lips, gums, tongue, and cheeks. It can develop in anyone, regardless of age or background. While the thought of cancer can be daunting, knowledge is power. Understanding the signs and symptoms can help you catch any issues early.
Self-checks are simple and can make a HUGE difference. Here’s what to look for:
Ulcers that don’t heal: Any ulcer or sores that stick around for more than two weeks should be checked by a dentist.
Lumps or thickening: Feel for any unusual lumps or changes in the tissues of your mouth.
White or red patches: Look for any patches on the inside of your mouth that are white or red in color.
Persistent pain: If you experience pain that doesn’t go away, it’s time to consult come and see us!
Difficulty swallowing: If you have trouble swallowing or experience a sore throat that lingers, don’t ignore it.
Make self-checks a part of your routine! Here’s a quick guide to help you:
Find a good light source: Natural light works best, but a bright lamp will do!
Use a mirror: A handheld mirror or your bathroom mirror will be just fine.
Inspect your mouth: Look for any changes in your lips, gums, tongue, and the roof and floor of your mouth
Feel around: Use your fingers to check for lumps or abnormalities.
Aim to check yourself monthly – a quick 45 second check could save your life – that’s 9 minutes a year.
Regular dental check-ups are crucial. We are trained to spot the early signs of mouth cancer, and include an oral cancer screening as part of every check-up and Hygienist appointment. We can help you understand your own risk factors and offer advice on maintaining good oral health. If you notice anything unusual, please don’t wait for your next appointment—schedule a quick check-in!
Mouth Cancer Action Month is not just about checking yourself; it’s about spreading the word. Share your knowledge with friends and family. The more people know, the better chance we have of catching mouth cancer early.
Check yourself regularly, visit your dentist, and spread the word. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that everyone knows the importance of oral health.
