The Briars Dental Centre in Newbury, Berkshire offers a specialist service in Periodontics from a highly trained and experienced Periodontist. Patients are referred from the Briars dentists or from dental practitioners in the local area.
Periodontics deals with the supporting structures around the teeth – the roots of the teeth, the gums and the underlying bone. One of the commonest causes of tooth loss later in life is gum disease (or periodontitis) which, when left untreated, causes inflammation of the gums, the development of gaps (pockets) between the gums and the teeth and the loss of the supporting bone. Eventually looseness of the teeth may be noticed and ultimately the teeth may be lost.
Periodontitis is caused by an abnormal response to the accumulation of bacteria (plaque) but it can be controlled with appropriate action on the part of the patient and with professional treatment, ensuring life-long retention of the teeth. Treatments range from simple personal and professional cleaning to surgical correction, all of which can be provided at the Briars.
Other forms of gum problems such as uneven gum margins affecting the smile, small teeth, gum recession and conditions affecting the skin of the mouth can also be treated by the Periodontist.
If you would like to discuss any of your concerns with your gums please contact us to arrange an appointment with the Periodontist.
